School Supply Kits

Why not take advantage of the School Supply Kits approved by our teachers per grade level? Doing so saves time, and the kits will be delivered to school and ready with school packets. The Schoolkidz supply forms will be distributed via your child’s folder this week. The form must be completed and sent to Ina Fricchione c/o PTO via your child’s folder by June 9th. Alternatively, you can complete an online form here (enter account 10957) by June 16th. Please email Ina with any questions or concerns.


Ad Hoc Committee for Elementary Enrollment Pursues Redistricting

In late April, the Ad Hoc Committee for Elementary Enrollment met to discuss a framework for redistricting, including a timeline, who will perform the work, and who will be involved in the process. The committee also discussed parameters for determining which schools should be considered for redistricting.

At a previous meeting, the committee decided that redistricting elementary students presents the most timely and cost-effective means of addressing the disparity in building population and allows for uniform delivery of the district’s elementary program over the next five years. It also provides the school board with flexibility in case student enrollment shifts significantly going forward.

Writers’ Workshop
Wednesday, January 20, 2016
9:30 am-11:45am: 3rd and 4th grade classrooms
3rd and 4th grade, each will have (2) 1 hr. sessions
This year we are looking forward to hosting our bi-annual Writer’s Workshop. Nine local writers will come to Hillside for a morning of writing workshops with the 3rd and 4th graders. Two writers will visit each classroom during the morning to teach the “how-to’s” of writing.

The Incredible Chinese Paper Cutting of Hou-Tien Cheng

Each 2nd grade class will have a 1/2 hour session
To conclude the 2nd grade’s unit of study of China and in anticipation of Chinese New Year, Master Cheng demonstrates the amazing and ancient art of Chinese Paper Cutting. Master Cheng is one of the most renowned Chinese paper-cutters in the world, and “will create any subject you can think of in paper cuts … quicker than two bites of a cookie.” He will create a work for each 2nd grader to take home. Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom during their paper-cutting session to see the demonstration and purchase additional paper-cuttings if they choose.

Betsy Ross: The Story of our Flag with Carol Spacht

4th Grade Classes

Fourth-graders will enjoy a visit with Betsy Ross as she tells The Story of Our Flag. See how the flag evolved and learn about its symbols. The audience participates in George Washington’s visit, and Betsy displays and discusses twelve different colonial flags and shares her secret for making a 5-pointed star. A question and answer session follows.
